Carla Klein (16.11.00)

the museum/photography and death/empty figuration/dystopia/non-places/indirect experience/

Science fiction is the perfect genre for describing dystopia. Related to the well known themes of science ficton such as Apocalypse or the lost world, dystopia is the reverse of utopia; not a fantasy of an ideal and paradisaical world, but the spectre of an environment that is becoming increasingly inhuman. like utopia, dystopia is not a nonexistent or unthinkable place, but it is rooted in contemporary reality. J.G. Ballard is one of the masters of this genre, and two of his dystopic visions in particular seem to resonate in the painting of Carla Klein. [Anke Bangma]

Borderhacking, Fran Ilich/Sebastian Ludgaarde (09.10.00)

Hacking is understood as the penetration, exploration or investigation of a system with the goal of understanding it, not of destroying it, and that is exactly what we are trying to do: to understand the border, to know what it represents and to become aware of the role that we play in it.

Instead of trying to dissolve the border, the goal of the camp is to apply to it a little reverse engineering, in other words, to try to understand its structure and to discover its workings.

Making a 'cloud of desire'. What role does our public play in this? What do we want from our public? What do we want to give them?
Making a stage. We have now formulated what it is we want to do and what it is we want for it in return.

Steini Torsson: AKI2

The work of the Icelandic artist Steini Torsson is exhibited in the exposition hall of the AKI2. Torsson discovered and began using new media through the accidental discovery of an animation function in a simple computer drawing programme.

In contrast to his paintings in which only the end result is visible to the viewer, Torsson's animation function of the drawing programme allows the viewer to see the drawing actually evolve.

In Torsson's newest paintings one also witnesses the influence that working with new meda has had upon him in his work.

During Reset one can Torsson's computer animations on a large screen and in combination with his paintings.

This exhibition is the final exam project of Torsson's post graduate study in the AKI2 programme.
