Here as the Centre of the world
A Transnational Artistic
Research Project
Dutch Art Institute / ArtEZ

Here as the Centre of the World was a transnational artistic research project that took place in six cities worldwide. It was initiated by The DAI/ArtEZ Institute of the Arts and was curated by Lucy Cotter, Gabriëlle Schleijpen and Alite Thijsen. The project asked what it might mean for global artists to reinstate their artistic reality in their local context, rather than in a notional ‘international’ art world. The book documents in-situ projects and features a rich array of visual material arising from a series of collaborations between artists from Beirut, Damascus, Diyarbakir, Enschede, Khartoum and Taipei. It reports and reflects on the real conditions in which cultural differences were articulated in the day-today activities of the seventy-five artists participating. The book takes the project as a departure point for further reflection by artists, writers, theorists and cultural producers.
With texts by Lilet Breddels, Lucy Cotter, Tony Chakar, Pascale Feghali, Rana Hamadeh, Ozkan Gölpinar, John Heymans, Erwin Jans, Khaled Khalifa, Bechara Malkoun, Rania Mamoun, Susannah Mira, Kawa Nemir, Alite Thijsen, Jerlian Tsao, Emily Williams, and Rajagopalan Radhakrishnan.

‘It is in conflict and in transformed understanding of conflict that artists look forward to “new forms of cultural imagining for the future”: realize the possibilities of culture against the grain of regnant nation states, against “the shadow lines” of regimes that divide people from people.’
From R.Radhakrishnan’s keynote essay Here in an Uneven World.
